"Reviving traditional British Saddlery Craftsmanship in Design"

Trained under the discerning eye of the the Queens Master Saddler, Mary Wing To is a fully qualified City & Guilds Harness Maker with a Masters degree in Fashion Design & Technology from London College of Fashion. Mary has passionately worked with Leather for over 10 years.

Biography

“Leather is an incredibly luxury material to work with, unique scars of beauty embedded for life no one piece is the same. For me no other material feels, looks or has a distinctive quality aroma like it. The rawness of leather as a living and breathing material means there are constant challenges. The beauty in working in such a raw process is that you learn to expect the unexpected that is why I’m so fascinated and constantly thrive on it”

Mary Wing To is a Leather Designer Harness Maker based in London. With a Master’s Degree in Fashion Design and Technology at The London College of Fashion, a City & Guilds trained saddler and a protégée of the Queen’s Master Saddler and Master Harness Maker at The Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace. The Manchester born designer has a unique skill set apart from the rest, a designer turned harness maker, who previously trained as a bespoke coat maker on Savile Row, Mary is also a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust Scholar.

Mary is dedicated to preserving British Saddlery Craftsmanship and has a deep passion for leather, she sculpts, carves, moulds, dyes and hand-stitches it to create outstanding luxurious products and sculptures, winning accolades of National and International awards for her workmanship. With the ability to work with leather in all forms she is in her element when creating and experimenting, innovation is integral to her work. Driven ultimately by her vision and love of leather and horses, Mary puts a new twist to the evolution of the fine tradition of British Leather Craft. Her esoteric creations, are a potent mix of drama and fashion combined with a love of all things equine, from the catwalk to the stable, from dress to dressage Mary was awarded The City and Guilds Lions Award for Creative Craftsperson of the Year in 2010. A registered member of The Society of Master Saddlers her sheer dedication and determination has gained her recognition from her fellow peers and those within the field and in 2012, Mary was appointed a Freeman of The Cordwainers Company, through redemption. Mary is an artisan, who works within the fashion and equine industries with commissions from a list of high profile clientele.

In 2013, she takes on the art of traditional whip making a rare skill found today that needs preserving within the UK. Here the unique journey of a ‘Horsegirl’ who is reviving British Saddlery Craftsmanship in design set upon sharing her vision with the rest of world….

“When you know how to handle such a living material the possibilities are limitless. It allows me to creatively express myself like no other".

Vision

“During this journey in discovering my creativity, I naturally fell in love with the stuff they call leather…..”

“My imagination lives in a fantasy of dreams and hopes, a lovesick devotion in the equine and a deep passion for leather and craftsmanship. Having come face to face with the wild and spirited creature I have been mesmerised by his loyalty, courage, and sheer beauty, which has forever captured my eyes. The special bond between mankind and horse became the heart and soul of my work, which can only be described as truly a labour of love. Be taken into my world, where creativity sees no boundaries, craftsmanship is the heart and leather becomes art ”.
